Hidden Killers of Thyroid Disease

You know how thyroid disease can cause so many troublesome symptoms. However, too few people realize that it can also shorten their lifespans, even when they’re on thyroid treatment. There are certain things they don’t tell you about. Here’s the ones that bother me the most.

Lupus

AKA Lupus erythematosus. Lupus is an autoimmune disease just like thyroid disease is. Lupus can be hard to diagnose because the symptoms are so vague, many of which are just like thyroid symptoms. Especially the hair loss, fatigue, and skin rashes. Data shows that having uncontrolled Hashimoto’s can leave you more at risk for developing Lupus, even if you feel fine.

Alzheimer’s Disease

Roughly 26% of us have genes that place us more at risk for developing Alzheimer’s. Amongst those with Hashimoto’s the risks are much higher because many of these worrisome genes are more common in those with Hashimoto’s.

Heart Disease

The link between heart disease and thyroid function is so strong, that blood levels of cholesterol were first used to evaluate thyroid function. Any way that your thyroid is not right can be hard on your heart – too much thyroid hormones, too little thyroid hormones, or the autoimmunity of Hashimoto’s.

Diabetes

The term thyrobetes came about because of the overlap between thyroid and diabetes. Anyone who has one disease is at more risk for the other. Hashimoto’s can lead to higher blood sugar in the bloodstream as well as problems with how your liver manages blood sugar.
